The answer is: yes, there is SunOS 4.1.1 for Sun 3's on the Sparc 4.1.1 CD,
but to build using it, you must copy the miniroot to the Sun 3's file system
because you cannot boot the Sun 3 remotely from the Sparc's CD. After that,
installation can proceed as usual using the remote sr0.
The other point I was oft told was that this was illegal if I don't have a
support contract with Sun for the Sun 3.
(My problem is that I bought the Sun 3 used and did not get any OS tapes and
I'm running into nasty problems with 4.0. My lab cannot afford a contract.)
I may just try to get a cartridge from the people who sold me the Sun 3.
