Thanks to the several dozen replies, you know who you are.
Original Question:
Our Sun manual says that the instructions for installing 4Mb SIMMS come
with Sun supplied 4Mb SIMMS. Of course we want to buy them somewhere else.
Can someone please send me instructions on what is involved in installing
these, and in mixing them with 1Mb SIMMS.
Solution:
SIMMS must be replaced in banks of four at a time. What constitutes a "bank"
is described in the Installation Guide Appendix A. Put verbally there
are two collumns of 8 SIMM slots in the machine. Divide each collumn in
half and you get banks of four. Bank #1 is the one nearest the floppy disk
(or floppy disk blanking plate if you are poor like us). Bank #1 must
*always* have memory in it. When adding memory or swapping 1MB for 4Mb
SIMMS you must do a whole bank at a time, and all SIMMS in a bank must be
of the same type. Other than that you can mix and match at will but it is
*advised* that you use the banks in order (bank #2 is in the same collumn
as #1, #3 and #4 are numbered in the same order) and that you put the larger
SIMMs in the lower banks.
There are NO dipswitches or jumpers to be set. Needless to say you want the
system powered down and an earthing lead on your wrist.
Thanks again all.
