Well, the problem turned out to be that the HP drive I had needs a
firmware upgrade to work with a Sparc 2. I don't know the details about what
the incompatibility is, but several people mentioned this to me, and I called
my vendor, and they've sent me (overnight) a new firmware board. Evidently,
this has nothing to do with synchronous SCSI; it's something with the SS2.
