My problem seems to stem from a set of experimental ip-multicast patches from
Xerox Parc. The crux of the matter is that somewhere in the kernel mbufs
are not being returned to the pool once used. It looks like this was a
problem before adding the two extra interfaces, but the rate of mbuf
orphanage has only now increased to the point where it is noticeable.
The fix, for now, is to go back to the generic kernel, which works
wonderfully, even with three ethernet interfaces.
As Hal Stern pointed out, the ethernet interfaces on the sbus machines are
so fast that there are rarely very many packets in transit, so there really
is no need for a larger mbuf pool.
