Cause:
the 9 point font is not included with the X11R4 fonts nor with
the OPENWIN fonts after coversion to snf using convertfont.
Solution:
1) alias the font to another one in the font.alias file in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi
and run mkfontdir.
2) use the -s option to convertfont(openwin) to force the font spec to
indicate that the font is a 9 point font.
I used solution 1 and it works fine now.
thanks to everyone for the help.
