The trick (in our case) to reset the keyboard was to login remotely and run
% kbd_mode -a
This command comes with Xwindows. The command
% setkeys reset
should work for those without Xwindows.
The above brings up the question (to perhaps be discussed elsewhere): lacking
remote access to the affected machine, how would one reset the console? I
guess in this case, power cycling the machine would be the only choice. (Would
L1-A still halt the system if the keyboard has been redefined?)
Thanks to the many who responded (more than 10 in less than 1/2 an hour and
more coming in!)
