Many thanks to all those who replied so quickly to my plea for
assistance. Of course I found my simple/stupid mistake right after I
sent the note... As was expected from the diagnostic, I knew that I
somehow lost the disk and the machine wanted to boot over the net...
My emacs macro that I used to comment out all of those other entries
went berserk and pounded my disk controller...
